Carolyn Cowan is a specialist portrait photographer based in South Croydon whose work seeks to "visually bare the soul." For more than two decades she has built a practice around creating quiet, intimate portraits that allow the sitter to expand and the stillness of the moment to become soft and very beautiful. Working from her house studio by appointment, Carolyn combines technical craft with an unhurried, compassionate process. She shoots on a medium-format Hasselblad, in both colour and black & white, and often spends between two and five hours with a sitter so there is time to settle, explore and find honest expression. You can bring a clear vision for the session or put yourself entirely in her hands—Carolyn adapts to what each person needs, organising make-up or hair on request to help you feel comfortable in front of the camera. Carolyn’s approach is deliberately non-judgmental. She creates a held space where time falls away and inner beauty is allowed to radiate into the frame. That philosophy—refusing to judge, aiming to open, reveal and allow—is what gives her portraits their depth and authenticity. Her background in bodypainting, documentary projects in India and a long history of exhibitions inform an eye for texture, tone and human presence that is distinctively hers. While portraiture is Carolyn’s primary focus, she also accepts commissions for business portraits and professional headshots when they align with her aesthetic and the relaxed pace she maintains.
