About the Photographer

I am a portrait photographer and darkroom printer working from 71 in Lewes. My practice is rooted in analogue photography — film, large format and hand-made darkroom prints — because I believe the material process brings a depth and intimacy to portraiture that digital alone cannot match. That said, I also use digital when quicker turnarounds or specific technical needs call for it, so I can tailor the approach to each client while always keeping artistic integrity at the centre. Why choose me? My portraits aim to capture the essence of a person rather than a pose. Shooting on film encourages a slower, more deliberate rhythm: it invites conversation, presence and subtle moments. I bring that considered pace to both studio and location sessions, helping even camera-shy subjects feel relaxed so genuine expressions and connections can emerge. Many of my images are finished as silver-gelatin darkroom prints — a tactile, exhibition-quality result that lasts. My background includes an MA in Photography from Brighton University and a history of exhibiting and publishing work. I bring that fine-art sensibility to commissioned portraiture: whether you want a quietly expressive studio portrait, a contemplative large-format image, or a set of portraits that sit between personal and editorial, I approach each session with the same careful attention to light, tone and composition. How I work: I favour a collaborative, calm approach. Before a shoot we discuss your intentions and reference points so the session is shaped around what matters to you. On the day I create a relaxed atmosphere — letting wardrobe, movement and natural expression guide the photographs. Post-shoot I use darkroom printing and careful digital grading where appropriate to realise the final images as prints or high-resolution files. I also teach analogue and darkroom workshops at 71, sharing processes from film development to black-and-white printing. If you value portraiture that is thoughtful, material and enduring, get in touch to discuss a session in Lewes — I’d love to hear about what you want to make.
